The Heart of England Way starts near Cannock Chase to the north-west of Birmingham, then heads south through rural Warwickshire and the Cotswolds, ending in the pretty village of Bourton-on-the-Water. it offers easy to moderate grade walking mostly through rolling farmland.
Cannock Chase, at the northern end of the trail, comprises a mixture of natural deciduous woodland, coniferous plantations and open heathland on well drained glacial pebble soil, which creates a distinctive landscape. It has been designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, which at 78.9 square km is the smallest AONB in the country.
The photos below, taken on our first day along the Heart of England Way, show that Cannock Chase is enjoyed by walkers, bikers, runners and families alike.
