The Uffington White Horse and Dragon Hill |
In the east, the Ridgeway first passes through small towns and villages on the plain before ascending into the beech woods in the Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), where red kites glide high in the skies and views to the north stretch over the rich Oxfordshire countryside. The trail then drops into the Thames valley to follow the river for 15 miles, between Watlington and Streatley, before ascending again onto the North Wessex Downs AONB. The route then takes the high ground again, crossing the Marlborough Downs with their rolling hills and wide vistas to north and south. This ancient trail, considered old in Saxon Times (450-1066 ad), passes close by some of England’s most impressive prehistoric monuments, like Barbury Castle, Uffington White Horse and Uffington Castle, Waylands Smithy, Grims Ditch and Ivinghoe Fort. The Bronze Age round barrows at the western end overlook the outstanding Avebury Stone Circle, Silbury Hill and West Kennet Long Barrow. |
